The Hopewell United Methodist Church will host a prayer vigil, “Lights for Liberty: End Child Detention & Family Separation” on Friday, July 12 at 7 p.m. This is in conjunction with many other organizations and churches holding vigils on Friday, July 12.
The community is invited to this service of prayer, song and sharing to raise awareness and stand with refugees seeking asylum who are experiencing a growing humanitarian crisis at the U.S. borders.
“Our government is holding thousands of children in detention centers across the country. Apart from being harmful to children and families, these policies are immoral and contrary to the Gospel's mandate,” Rev. Laura Steele, pastor of Hopewell UMC said.
“Our hope is this service will provide an opportunity for the community to come together and pray about this issue, raise awareness and to make a statement that we stand with God’s call to show love and compassion to our neighbors.”
After the service, the community can send messages to the Administration and Congress.
The church is located at 20 Blackwell Ave., Hopewell, NJ 08525. For information and directions, visit www.hopewellmethodist.org.
