Brian Nelson scored three goals and Eddie Evaldi added a goal and four assists as the Hun School ice hockey team topped Princeton, 9-4, Friday at Mercer County Park to claim its sixth straight Mercer County Tournament title.
“This means everything,’’ said Nelson, who was named the game's Most Valuable Player. “We look forward to this right from the beginning of the year. We become brothers through the year and to be captain is always an honor.’’
Nelson's first goal snapped a 1-1 tie as the Raiders built a 4-1 advantage by the end of the first period. Princeton got as close as 6-3 before the Raiders pulled away for the title. It was the third straight year Hun defeated the Little Tigers in the final.
Hun finished the season with a 15-8-1 record. Princeton, which will play in the state tournament beginning next week, fell to 13-9-3 with the loss.
“It amazing,’’ Nelson said of earning the MVP homor. “I never would of thought about this when I was a freshman. I have grown a lot as a player here and it’s all thanks to coach (Ian McNally) and some great guys that have come through the program. I knew I was going to have to step up and this has been the best year of my career. It’s been awesome.’’
