Aarush Kumar of East Brunswick will be honored by the United States Tennis Association in a ceremony on Jan. 26 at the Renaissance Westchester Hotel in West Harrison, N.Y.

He is one of 11 junior players who will be honored for outstanding sportsmanship during the 2018 season.

Kumar was named the Richard D. Lynch, II Boys’ 12 and Under Sportsmanship Award winner by the Eastern Junior Competition Committee on Jan. 11.

Tournament directors and coaches nominate players for the USTA sportsmanship awards throughout the year.

“Whether they win or lose, we feel it is imperative that our junior athletes develop and demonstrate exemplary sportsmanship as they progress in the game,” said Julie Bliss Beal, USTA Eastern senior director of competitive tennis. “Professionalism won’t always win you hardware, but our special annual ceremony gives us the opportunity to recognize these bright young players who have routinely displayed empathy and respect for both their opponents and for tournament officials.”

The USTA Eastern Section encompasses New York state, northern New Jersey and Greenwich, Conn. There are 17 geographic sections and more than 49,000 members in the USTA, the governing body of tennis in the United States.
