EDUCATION is an inherently optimistic endeavor. But what exactly is it about education that inspires such optimism? Why do teachers work tirelessly year after year, dedicating their careers to young people? Why do some parents invest thousands of dollars in the private education of their children? Fundamentally, I think that teachers see themselves as builders, as creators, and as ones who inspire. We seek to inspire youth to achieve great things, to become more than they once thought they could be.
Lottie was 78 years old when she painted her first picture. Canvas, brushes, paint and smock were provided by the Jewish Home for the Aged that had been her residence for five years. The painting was a view from the beach, Coney Island in Brooklyn, and clearly communicated her awe of the mighty Atlantic Ocean.
A lost job is one thing, a vanished career another. The restructuring of the economy due to globalization and technological change, exacerbated by the current downturn, has left many bereft.
