Two Montgomery Township police officers, who pulled a dog out of a frozen pond in January, were honored with the Whiskers Watson Animal Lifesaving Medal on May 17 for their “heroic” actions.
Officer Sal Intili and Sgt. John Colucci were sent to Avalon Lakes Court after a caller reported that his dog had escaped from the back yard and had fallen into a pond.
Intili put on a personal flotation device while Colucci held onto its safety rope. Intili walked out onto the frozen pond, grabbed the dog’s harness and pulled the dog to safety.
David Watson, who founded the Whiskers Watson Animal Hero Awards Foundation, said the police officers risked their own lives to rescue the golden retriever dog.
“The police officers’ actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of police service and kindness toward animals,” he said. “Their actions reflect great credit upon themselves, their community and the Montgomery Township Police Department.”
The Whiskers Watson Animal Hero Awards Foundation was created earlier this year in memory of Watson’s cat, whom he described as the best cat in the world.
The award recognizes humans who risk their lives to rescue animals in distress. Showcasing such acts of heroism seeks to raise awareness about the incredible bond between humans and animals, inspiring compassion and respect for all living things, Watson said.
