The intersection of Jefferson Road and Terhune Road will become a four-way stop intersection.
A stop sign has been in place on Terhune Road, and now the Princeton Council approved an ordinance to add a stop sign on Jefferson Road. This means vehicles traveling on both streets must come to a complete stop at the intersection of Jefferson Road and Terhune Road.
Despite previous steps to reduce crashes at the Jefferson Road/Terhune Road intersection, implementing a four-way stop at the intersection is the next step to reducing those crashes, Assistant Municipal Engineer James Purcell wrote in a memorandum.
Those steps have included oversized stop signs, double stop signs, and “Stop ahead” markings and rumble strips on the pavement.
The town has installed advance warning signs, reflective tape on the stop-sign posts, and additional sign placards stating that cross traffic on Jefferson Road does not stop.
Princeton Councilman David Cohen said that during the nearly 30 years that he has lived near the intersection, he has constantly heard the sound of crashes – metal on metal and the shattering of glass.
“It is something that the Traffic Safety Committee has really wrung our hands over and knitted our brows over,” said Cohen, who chairs the committee. “We have tried to figure out a solution.
“We are not taking this action lightly. We hope it will cut down on the number of crashes.”
