Dr. Deborah Miller

Former Associate Director of the

Melton Research Center for Jewish Education

Tuesday, April 5th | 8:00 p.m. | Via Zoom

In this session on Hagar, the second wife of Abraham, we will carefully read and consider two stories in the Torah that let us view her relationship with Abraham and Sarah, with her son, Ishmael, and with God. We will view a selection of dramatic pieces of art that interpret the dynamics in the stories, and that may suggest dimensions that we might have missed.

Dr. Deborah Miller is the former Associate Director of the Melton Research Center for Jewish Education. She taught educators, rabbis and cantors “Methods of Teaching Prayer” and “Methods of Teaching Bible” at the Jewish Theological Seminary. Debby was the founding Project Director and Editor of MaToK, the Bible curriculum for day schools. At JTS, she also headed implementation of the Jim Joseph Educational Initiative grant. Dr. Miller earned her MA and EdD at the Davidson Graduate School of Jewish Education at JTS, and her BA at Barnard College. Before coming to JTS, she headed the Solomon Schechter Day School of Raritan Valley. Her first day school positions were teaching at what is now Golda Och Academy in New Jersey. She has also worked in congregational schools and informal settings. She does outreach work for Tivnu: Building Justice, a Jewish gap year program in Portland, Oregon.

Debby is the author of five Jewish children’s books, including Only Nine Chairs: A Tall Tale for Passover, (Kar-Ben) a PJ Library book selection, and My Siddur, published by Behrman House.
